Butterflies!

While I was in Chattanooga earlier this week, I took a short excursion with the Holritz family to the Tennessee Aquarium... I love that place! ...and one of the things I love about it is that it has a lepidoptary (butterfly garden). I had only about an hour in there but it felt like 10 minutes.... trying to shoot butterflies in flight is hard! Thanks to Becca for letting me borrow her 105mm macro (I stupidly sold mine and will now be buying it again).

I'm so glad you came to Chattanooga... These are gorgeous images. Next time, we'll drop you off in the morning and come back and get you around lunch... and then come back afterward for more!

That second one is an alien and might haunt me in my dreams.

I try to get pictures of butterflies in my yard and it seems like I'm always a half a second too late. Any tips?

Ha! I hear ya, Amy. It can be quite hard sometimes. A long lens (or macro; or a long macro), fast shutter speed, and a lot of patience helps. If you're using a point-and-shoot with a long shutter lag, it's even harder. One trick we us in nature photography is to very gently catch the butterfly, then put it in the frigde for about an hour... this slows them WAY down without hurting them. Good luck!

That looks like so much fun! Give me a macro lens and a room full of butterflies and flowers anyday! Great shots!

I'm in love with the texture in that third one! I want to pet it and pet it and love it like my very own.
